Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

Created around 1818 by German Romanticist Caspar David Friedrich, "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" portrays an anonymous man atop a jagged precipice looking over an immense blanket of mist. Using the Rückenfigur device, Friedrich turns his figure entirely away from the viewer, directing all focus onto the swirling, boundless expanse of peaks and ridges that emerges below. The composition was constructed to evoke the Romantic concept of the sublime, framing nature as vast, mysterious, and awe-inspiring. Often interpreted as an emblem of profound self-reflection or a meditation on the journey of life, the canvas has also been read as a reflection of Friedrich's German identity. Today, it stands as Friedrich's defining masterpiece and one of the quintessential emblems of the entire Romantic movement.
