The Court of Gayumars

The Court of Gayumars is an exquisite Persian miniature attributed to Sultan Muhammad, created between circa 1522 and 1525. It formed part of the monumental Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp, also known as the Houghton Shahnameh, which illustrates the national epic of Greater Iran and stands as a peak achievement of Persian miniature painting. Hand-painted by master artists of the imperial workshop in Tabriz during the reigns of Shah Ismail I and Shah Tahmasp I, the manuscript originally contained 759 pages, including 258 miniatures painted on sheets measuring roughly 48 by 32 centimeters. In 1568, the finished manuscript was presented as a diplomatic gift to the Ottoman Sultan Selim II. Celebrated for its supreme craftsmanship, fine Nasta'liq script, and lavish design, the original manuscript was later dispersed in the 1970s, scattering its individual pages among diverse collections across the globe.
